Winners & Grinners

Congratulations to the winners of Buy My Duck 2010!

 Winners

Year 3-5

The Years 3-5 section was won by Wanneroo Primary School pupils Robannie Sumner and Shayleigh Lowther, who made a four-player board game called ‘Refund Run’. The game requires players to throw a die and correctly answer questions about remedy entitlements in relation to faulty goods and a sellers’ right to refuse a refund for wrong choice.

Year 6-7

Jasmine Irvine of West Coast PEAC was top of the Years 6-7 category with an excellently produced short film about shopping choices. Submitted as a DVD, it shows Jasmine in a range of shopping scenarios, accurately outlining the relevant consumer advice in a very entertaining way.

Year 8-12

In the Years 8-12 category Kelsey Dransfield, Lilli Pettet and Madison Newby from Nagle Catholic College in Geraldton took the top prize after creating a colourful poster. It outlines what a warranty is, how to get a refund, plus general budgeting tips.

Teacher

One teacher was chosen to receive a cash prize. Lisa Edwards from Wanneroo Primary received $250 for involving 27 pupils in this year’s Buy My Duck competition.

What teachers say about Buy My Duck

"This is the second year students from Wanneroo Primary School's Extension Program have been involved in the Buy My Duck Competition. Each year I plan a terms work around the central theme using some of the activities from the competition website. This is a great resource for teachers as the activities are linked to outcomes in SOSE, English, Mathematics and Technology and Enterprise.

My students are very enthusiastic and engaged as they learn about their rights and responsibilities as consumers and about the many scams that people can fall victim to. We use the Consumer Protection site to investigate and research 'real-life' examples with many students also looking in newspapers and magazines, which they then bring into class for a discussion.

We look forward to participating next year-most of the students are already planning their 2010 entry!

Thanks to Consumer Protection for such a wonderful competition".

Liza Edwards - Teacher from Wanneroo Primary School

"This competition is a fantastic way to teach young people about consumer issues. The task gave so many opportunities to assess a range of learning outcomes in a manner which the students found engaging and relevant. I found that their level of knowledge regarding consumer issues increased dramatically as they researched and shared information. They learnt valuable life skills which will stand them in good stead as they enter the consumer market."

Rensche Diggeden, Teacher - formerly of St Stephen's Primary School

"The beauty of the competition is the openendedness! Children were able to be as creative as they wished whilst still researching and understanding their rights. The prize money is a wonderful incentive for schools at a time of budget cuts. I have purchased animation programs for the Extension children to work on next year. Thank you!"

Tanya Atherton - Extension Teacher

"In Term 3 and 4 of 2007 the two Year 10 Economics extension classes at Bunbury Catholic College participated in the Department of Commerce's Buy My Duck 2007 competition. This was done as an assessment for the College, as the competition guidelines dovetailed well with our program which focused on personal finance decision making.

After spending some time examining the DOCEP website to develop a greater awareness of some of the traps or scams that young consumers should be aware of, students selected the areas they wished to explore in more detail. Students chose topics that included ScamNet - internet scams, REVS - Register of Encumbered Vehicles, Product Recall Lists, Credit Card Advice, Mobile Phone Plan, Advice, Health Club Membership Advice, Travel / Holiday Advice, Workplace Safety Advice, Fair pay / employer / employee rights and responsibilities.

I was very pleased with the enthusiasm and endeavour the students displayed in pursuing their chosen topics. They were impressed by the work of previous winners which was available for them to see on the DOCEP competition website. The students appreciated that these are issues that they are now or soon will become involved with, and that the choices they make could have serious financial implications for them.

They were aware that many young people do get caught out, and that personal experience provided the inspiration for the song "Scammed on the Internet" written and performed by one of our groups, the "Impossible Island Band". The students and I enjoyed participating in the competition; it was interesting, informative and well organized. We thank the Department of Commerce for this great learning opportunity and look forward to being involved again in 2008."
