How to enter

The Buy My Duck competition is open to all State and Government school students in Years 3-12. Entrants must be under 18 years of age.

While we acknowledge students may enter the competition through a club, association or after school centre, the school and teacher prizes will only be awarded to a State or Government schools.

Challenge

The Buy My Duck competition challenges students to create a 'Survival guide to shopping' for their peers. To follow the theme provided in 2009 students' projects should focus on consumer advice when retail shopping or buying and operating a mobile phone. Guides should be fun and creative. Previous entries have included posters, brochures, short films and music clips.

Entries must be received by Friday 3 July 2009 and accompanied with a completed entry form.

All students and teachers who submit an entry in the competition will receive a certificate of participation.

Getting Started

Teachers, your students may work individually or in a group (a maximum of four students per group). The Buy My Duck 2009 competition has a central theme of retail shopping and mobile phones.

As a first step register the individual students entering or groups. The information is used to support your students as they participate in the competition.

Use the stories and lesson plans to introduce discussions on consumer rights into the classroom.

Use the themes from the lesson plans to ask your students to create a guide, in any format: a poster, brochure or a multimedia presentation, which will help other young consumers avoid pitfalls when shopping and become more informed and consumers.

Please note multimedia/electronic entries need to be submitted via YouTube. Please name your entries Buy My Duck 09 - then add your school name and submission name e.g. "Buy My Duck 09 ABC Senior School Don't Get Ripped Off". The judges will be assessing each entry on how the work:

The metropolitan and regional categories are:

Prizes include $250 for student(s) and $2,000 for the school's learning centre plus a Teacher Incentive Award of $250.

Please note the regional category includes residents of Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands.

Teacher Incentive Award

All teachers who submit their Buy My Duck classroom activities or lesson plan (with curriculum links) and their Teacher Feedback Form are in the running to win $250.

Submitting entries

Get your students to fill in the Buy My Duck entry form.

Ensure the students print their names clearly and have all pieces of their entry marked with their name.

Special notes

All entries will become the property of the Department of Commerce. Entries will not be returned to participants.

Entries may be used in whole or part in non-profit consumer protection education initiatives, or for the promotion of consumer protection issues in the community.
