The inaugural Buy My Duck was first run as a film competition in 2006. More than 50 entries were received that year. The competition was created by Consumer Protection and hosted by Revelation Perth International Film Festival.

The multimedia projects were produced by Curtin University students. Consumer Protection approached Curtin University's Multimedia Design course to develop projects using Macromedia Flash software.
Students created interactive scenarios and role-plays on consumer protection issues including shopping rights, tenancy, buying a car and managing credit cards.
