New set of national laws were introduced on 1 January 2011
Australia will have a single, national consumer law: the Australian Consumer Law (ACL). It includes:
- unfair contract terms;
- consumer rights when buying goods and services, which includes warranties;
- national product safety laws;
- unsolicited consumer agreements, e.g. door-to-door sales and other direct marketing;
- lay-by agreements; and
- new penalties, enforcement powers and consumer redress options, which currently apply nationally.
