Do I need a PPS check?

When you buy a second-hand vehicle privately there is a risk that there could be money owing on it. As the new owner you could become liable for this debt.

It is advisable to do a PPS check. The The Personal Property Securities Register (PPS) is a service that can tell you whether or not a vehicle is recorded as "encumbered"meaning there could be money owing on the vehicle or that the seller may not own the vehicle outright.

However, when you buy from a dealer, the dealer must guarantee title so you do not need a PPS check.

You can also check if the vehicle has been listed on the 'Written Off Vehicle Register' when you do a PPS check.
