The Ministry of Fair Trading reminds consumers to think carefully about various membership options if they are considering joining a health club.
With the approach of summer it is often at this time of the year that people think about getting fit by going to a gym or a health club so it is timely to remind consumers to carefully consider membership available.
"Consumers need to ask questions and make sure they clearly understand the requirements of different options available before making a choice to take up membership of a gym or health club, said Commissioner for Fair Trading Pat Walker.
"If you are not sure you will be able to use the facilities regularly you may want to consider signing up for a short term period.
"Another benefit of short term membership is that consumers reduce the potential of financial loss if the club or gym ceases operations."
Mr Walker reminds consumers there are some general tips to consider before signing up for a membership.
- When paying monthly by direct debit, check that the debiting will stop at a certain date.
- Don’t sign if you are not sure of all the obligations.
- Don’t pay the full amount up front for long term contracts.
- Be aware there is no cooling off period.
- Shop around for a deal that best suits your needs. Ask questions about days you can access the facilities, any restricted access, extra charges, creche facilities etc.
- If the contract allows for direct debiting after a specified period make sure you keep records of when this occurs and notify the health club in writing when you intend to discontinue the contract.
- Check credit card and Eftpos statements regularly to see that you are not paying for a service that you are not using and do not wish to continue.
