Three operations running out of the Eastern States are the subject of a consumer warning as they proceed to flood small businesses and community groups in WA with unsolicited mail informing them of the need to renew or register their Internet domain name.
"Domain names do not need to be renewed with anyone other than your existing carrier.
"Anyone falling for this ruse could not only be out of pocket up to $237 but find themselves with an additional domain name they don't need", Consumer Protection Commissioner Patrick Walker said.
Domain Names Australia Pty Ltd, Internet Registry Pty Ltd and Net Register are sending out invoice-like documents that could fool recipients into thinking they have a bill to pay.
Although not clearly stated, the document is actually arranging another version of an existing domain name at an inflated price.
"The Internet Domain Name Regulator (AUDA) advise that a two-year license for a domain name can cost under $100, less than half the amount these shysters are after.
"Deal only with your trusted Internet Service Provider, keep a rigid control on your payments procedure and report any contact with any of these dodgy operators to us ", Mr. Walker said.
If you receive one of these or a similar `offer' do not respond in any way - post or fax it to WA ScamNet and help us put them out of business fast.
