WA’s Commission for Occupational Safety and Health has proposed to lower the amount of asbestos that can be removed without a licence, and is calling for public submissions on the issue.
A discussion paper was issued in June, and the public comment period is due to end on September 1.
At present, a license is not required unless more than 200 square metres of asbestos cement roofing material is being removed, or thermal or acoustic cement products are involved.
Asbestos cement products do not pose a risk to health if they are left undisturbed in buildings. However, there is a serious risk of exposure to asbestos fibres during the disturbance or removal of asbestos-containing materials unless basic safety precautions are followed.
Commission Chair Tony Cooke said today that the discussion paper was the result of careful consideration of the health effects associated with asbestos.
“The Commission has long had concerns about the potential for serious health effects from exposure where safety precautions are not followed,” Mr Cooke said.
“Because of these concerns, the Commission is considering recommending stronger controls on the removal of asbestos cement sheeting, with the proposal being to require licensing for all removal of ten or more square metres of asbestos cement material.
“It is important that the Commission receives comments from industry representatives, unions, organisations and community members to ensure all views are thoroughly considered.
“I strongly encourage anyone who has an interest in the issue of asbestos removal to study the discussion paper and make a submission, thereby playing a part in the future safety and health of Western Australians.”
