"Full house" for landlords' seminars
Issue Date: - Thursday, 2 July 2009
Landlords in Perth’s biggest rental markets have packed out seminars aimed at bringing them up to date with Western Australia’s tenancy laws, and proposed changes to them.
The Commissioner for Consumer Protection Anne Driscoll said two seminars in the past week for landlords with property in the Northern and Fremantle Coastal regions had attracted capacity audiences.
“The forums, in Joondalup and Melville, addressed key issues for landlords, including the problem areas with rent rises, difficulties with bonds, property maintenance and property inspections,” Ms Driscoll said.
“The purpose of the meetings was to inform and advise landlords on their rights and responsibilities, and to ensure they have the correct information in dealing with tenants.”
The metropolitan area’s biggest rental areas, the North coastal corridor and the Southern coastal strip, had been specifically selected.
“Our records show the northern corridor is the biggest rental zone with more than 9,500 rental bonds lodged for the area. The Southern strip is almost as big with 9,000 bonds lodged for rental properties,” Ms Driscoll said.
Property investors who were unable attend the seminars still have access to information through a new ‘Landlords Pack’, a one stop shop dealing with many of the common problems faced by landlords.
The Landlords Pack which is available on the Consumer Protection website www.commerce.wa.gov.au/landlords-pack, or by calling Consumer Protection on 1300 30 40 54.
