2008 Distribution Wood Pole Audit Review

A Review of Western Power's Response to the 2006 Regulatory Compliance Assessment of Western Power's Distribution Wood Pole Management Systems

Power pole failure and bush fire, Balingup, Western Australia - 14 February 2009

Power line fault and bushfire near Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse, Dunsborough - 7 February 2009

Power line fault and bushfire near Breakwater Drive, Two Rocks - 16 January 2009

Power line fault and bush fire at Parkerville - 3 January 2008

A bush fire occurred near Brindle Road, Parkerville on 3 January 2008 and the Fire and Emergency Service Authority (FESA) advised EnergySafety at approximately 1700 hours on the same day. The bush fire appeared to have originated near a Western Power three phase 22,000 volt (22 kV) overhead power line. After inspecting the site an investigation was conducted and this report summarises EnergySafety's findings.

Media Release 9 July 2007 by Director of Energy Safety re status of Toodyay and Parryville fire investigations

Power line fault and wild fire at Parryville - 7 March 2007

A wild fire occurred near Parryville on 7 March 2007. EnergySafety carried out an investigation into the cause of the fire and determined that the fire started when a 22 kV conductor clashed with an underslung earth wire, releasing hot metal globules that fell to the ground and ignited dry grass.

Power line fault and wild fire at Toodyay - 3 February 2007

A wild fire occurred near Chatcup Road on 3 February 2007. EnergySafety carried out an investigation into the cause of the fire and determined that the fire started when a 22 kV conductor clashed with an underslung earth wire, releasing molten metal that fell to the ground and ignited dry stubble.

Western Power's Wood Pole Management Systems: Regulatory Compliance Audit 2005

Wild fire at Allanson - 4 February 2005

EnergySafety carried out an investigation into the fire and could not determine the cause. The fire originated in the area of a network operator's power pole. However, there was no evidence of equipment being responsible for ignition of the fire.

Wild fire at West Esperance - 15 December 2004

A wild fire occurred at Location 1434 South Coast Highway, about 42 km west of Esperance, on 15 December 2004. EnergySafety carried out an investigation into the cause of the fire and determined that the fire started when a 33 kV blue phase conductor clashed with the underslung running earth conductor, releasing burning metal particles that fell to the ground and ignited dry harvested stubble.

Wild fire at Esperance - 14 December 2004

A wild fire occurred at Lot 2 Location 1039 Moonup Road, about 40 km west of Esperance, on Tuesday 14 December 2004. EnergySafety carried out an investigation into the cause of the fire and determined that the fire started when a sheep came into contact with a fallen 19.1 kv phase conductor.  The pole supporting the phase conductor had previously fallen to the ground. Heat generated from current flow through the sheep ignited dry stubble.

Wild fire at Wungong - 14 December 2004

EnergySafety carried out an investigation into the cause of the fire and determined that it originated when power lines were able to clash during strong gusty winds. The clashing caused a circuit fuse to operate. Hot metal debris from the fuse link ignited dry grass.

Wild fire near Esperance - 10 December 2004

A wild fire occurred at Location 1482 South Coast Highway, about 72 km west of Esperance, on Friday 10 December 2004. EnergySafety carried out an investigation into the cause of the fire and determined that the fire started when a calf came into contact with a fallen 19.1 kv phase conductor.  The pole supporting the phase conductor had previously fallen to the ground. Heat generated from current flow through the calf ignited dry stubble.

Wild fire at Dalyup (Location 745) - 2 December 2004

A wild fire occurred at Location 745 Bates Road, Dalyup, about 20 km west of Esperance, on Thursday 2 December 2005. EnergySafety carried out an investigation into the cause of the fire and determined that the fire started when a network operator's power pole fell to the ground. The pole failed during strong winds

Wild fire at Dalyup (Location 1501) - 2 December 2005

A wild fire occurred at Location 1501 Dalyup, about 40 km west of Esperance, on Thursday 2 December 2005. EnergySafety carried out an investigation into the cause of the fire. The Investigation revealed that a live high voltage conductor became detached from a pole mounted insulator and clashed with the underslung earth conductor. The resulting flashover released hot metal particles which ignited dry stubble below, starting the wild fire.

Wild fire near Esperance - 2 December 2004

EnergySafety carried out an investigation into the fire and determined that it was caused when a Western Power (the network operator) power pole broke and fell over during high winds. A live high voltage conductor clashed with the underslung earth conductor and the resulting flashover caused hot metal particles to ignite dry stubble.

Wild fire near Katanning - 2 December 2004

EnergySafety carried out an investigation into the cause of the fire and determined that the cause of the fire was a fault on a Western Power (the network operator) overhead power line.

Wild fire at Bridgetown - 27 December 2003

EnergySafety carried out an investigation into the cause of the fire and determined that the cause of the fire was a fault on a Western Power (the network operator) overhead power line.

Power line fault and bush fire at Tenterden - 27 December 2003

EnergySafety carried out an investigation into the cause of the fire and determined that the cause of the fire was a fault or failure of a Western Power (the network operator) overhead power line.

Power line fault and bush fire at Gingin - 20 December 2002

EnergySafety carried out an investigation into the cause of the fire and determined that the cause of the fire was a fault on a Western Power (the network operator) overhead power line.
