Gas appliances

A person shall not sell or hire any gas appliance or advertise any gas appliance for sale or hire in Western Australia unless the gas appliance is approved by the Director of Energy Safety, and is marked, stamped or labelled in the manner approved by the Director.

Type A gas appliances

Type A appliances are domestic and commercial gas appliances listed in the table of regulation 42B of the Gas Standards (Gasfitting and Consumer Gas Installations) Regulations 1999.

Series or mass produced Type A gas appliances and components must be certified as approved for sale, hire or use in WA.  Currently The Australian Gas Association (AGA), SAI Global and IAPMO R&T Oceana are recognised by the Director as competent bodies for the approval of gas appliances. Consequently, appliances certified under those appliance safety certification schemes are accepted for installation in this State, unless the certification is revoked by publication in the Government Gazette.

Appliances not carrying such certification must be specifically approved by an inspector and have an approval badge attached. The latter approval is at the discretion of the Director and is generally granted for an interim period pending AGA, SAI Global or IAPMO R&T Oceana certification.   Independent Type A Gas Appliance Inspectors are available to carry out certification of Type A gas appliances.  The Director designates these inspectors.

    Type B Gas Appliances

Type B appliances are large commercial and industrial gas appliances.

A Type B appliance must not be installed in a consumer's gas installation unless it is currently approved for such installation by the Director or it is individually approved in writing for such installation by an inspector. This requires the manufacturer/installer to satisfy a Type B Gas Appliance Inspector, through a technical submission (that is, a desktop appraisal) that the appliance will satisfy the technical standards required by the regulations.

Independent Type B Gas Appliance Inspectors are available to carry out certification of Type B gas appliances.

Mobile engines fuelled by liquefied petroleum gas (LP Gas) or natural gas (NG) are subject to the requirements set out in the Gas Standards (Gasfitting and Consumer Gas Installations) Regulations 1999. A registered gas fitter with a Class E permit can certify a mobile engine for compliance by fixing appropriate badges and labels to the installation (vehicle, small portable generator etc.) and submitting a Notice of Completion to the customer and the Director.

    In general terms:

Type A appliances will be assessed and tested to the appropriate AGA or SAI Global Code.

Type B appliances are assessed against those requirements set out in Australian Standards AS 3814 / AG 501 and AS 1375.

Mobile engines are required to comply and be identified as complying with Australian / New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 1425 for LP Gas or Australian Standard AS 2739 for Natural Gas. Stationary engines are classified as Type B appliances.
