Western Australian Fellowships Program

The Western Australian Fellowships Program is designed is to attract distinguished researchers of international prominence, from interstate or overseas, to lead Western Australian research teams.

Call for expression of interest (EOI) applications

Round 3 (2013) of the Western Australian Fellowships Program is open for EOI applications. Applications must be received at the Department of Commerce by 3.00 pm (WST) on Wednesday 26 June 2013.

Marine sustainability, estuary health and information and communications technology are focus areas for this round. However, applications in other research fields are also welcome.

Objectives

The major aim of the Western Australian Fellowships Program is to attract distinguished researchers of international prominence, from interstate or overseas, to lead Western Australian research teams.

The objectives of the Western Australian Fellowships Program are to:

  • increase the number of world-class people conducting research in Western Australia;
  • increase research and development investment in Western Australia;
  • facilitate research collaboration with Commonwealth Government agencies and focus on leveraging Commonwealth Government funding;
  • improve Western Australia’s national, international and industry connections in strategic innovation; and
  • undertake research that is of major importance, potentially high impact and of significant benefit to Western Australia.

Funding available

The level of funding support available under the Western Australian Fellowships Program is up to $1 million per successful application over four years. The level of funding will be dependent on investment attracted to Western Australia and on how the proposed objectives measure against relevant evaluation criteria.

The host institution will be required to enter into a financial assistance agreement. A sample financial assistance agreement is available (PDF).

Application process

Applicants and host institutions intending to apply for funds under the Western Australian Fellowships Program should read the applicant information and contact Dr Simon Aarons (Project Manager, Department of Commerce) on 08 9263 8266 to discuss their potential application. Only eligible applications will be considered.

The Western Australian Fellowships Program EOI Form (PDF) must be completed and received at the Department of Commerce by the specified deadline.

Outcomes of Round 1 and 2

In May 2012, the Minister for Science and Innovation announced the successful Western Australian Fellow from Round 1 of the program, Professor Andrew Whiteley.

In February 2013, the Minister for Science and Innovation announced one of the three successful Western Australian Fellows from Round 2, Professor Mark Jessell.

In May 2013, the Minister for Science announced the other two successful Western Australian Fellows from Round 2, Professor Carole Jackson and Professor Darlene Ketten.
