Categories

The 2012 WA Science Awards celebrate the State’s best scientists, science communicators and science teachers in six categories:

Research

  • Scientist of the Year – Cash prize of $50,000

The Scientist of the Year is a world class scientist who, over the past 10 years, has demonstrated excellence in a field of science, scientific research or technological advancement in Western Australia.

  • Early Career Scientist of the Year – Cash prize of $10,000

The Early Career Scientist of the Year is an individual scientist within the first five years of completing their highest degree, who has demonstrated excellence in a field of science, scientific research or technological advancement in Western Australia.

  • Student Scientist of the Year - Cash prize of $10,000

The Student Scientist of the Year is a post graduate student who has demonstrated a commitment to science at an early stage and shows great promise in reaching the highest levels of excellence.

Communication

  • Science Ambassador of the Year – Cash prize of $10,000

The Science Ambassador of the Year is an individual scientist who has demonstrated commitment to undertaking meaningful science advocacy and engagement in addition to their core research activities.

  • Science Engagement Initiative of the Year – Cash prize of $10,000

The Science Engagement Initiative of the Year has made an outstanding contribution to community awareness, interest and/or participation in science, technology, engineering or mathematics in Western Australia.

Education

  • Educator of the Year – Cash prize of $10,000

The Educator of the Year is a teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to education in science, technology, engineering or mathematics and has improved learning outcomes for students in a Western Australian primary or secondary school.
