Safe Work October 2012
Safe Work October 2012 is a new initiative from WorkSafe to help promote safety across all workplaces in Western Australia. This month includes the National Safe Work Australia Week, which is now in its seventh year.
October is safe work month, become part of the nationwide focus on safety. Workplaces across Australia will be organising activities during October.
How to get started on planning an event or activity

Set your target audience - training, information or activities can be planned for small work teams, a work area, division or the whole workplace;

Plan - What type of activity or event is best suited to your target audience, issue or topic and the budget;

Promote - Copy and distribute a flyer/email, ask managers and supervisors to promote the event, tell people about it as word of mouth is the best way to get information to people;

On the day - Take photos of your activity for your own records to publish in your work newsletter or place on notice boards;
Possible activities for your workplace
Safety in action

Check for hazards on your workplace. Guide to inspecting the workplace

Conduct an emergency evacuation drill

Check chemicals and hazardous substances are stored and labelled properly and have an MSDS. Guidance note MSDSs

Do some housekeeping to tidy work areas

Elect safety and health reps or establish a committee. Guidance note: Formal consultative procedures in the workplace
Education and training

Hold 10 @ 10 talks

Invite a specialist to hold a training or information session

Contact WorkSafe to get a community education officer to do a session in your workplace

Arrange basic first aid training

Hold a tool box talk with your work team

Do a safety quiz and award a prize

Attend the half day safety and health workshops
Spread the word

Put a display of posters and publications in your workplace.

Once we have received details of your event it to be listed on the Safe Work October 2012 events page and you will receive a participation badge which you can proudly display on your website, demonstrating your commitment to safety in the workplace.
