This announcement is for:
Employee / workerEmployer

If you are a hair salon business owner or a hairdresser and you are  covered by the state industrial relations system, here is the information you need to know about employee entitlements for the Australia Day public holiday in 2019.

Under the Hairdressers Award, Monday 28 January 2019 is the public holiday for Australia Day. Saturday 26 January 2019 is an ordinary working day and ordinary rates of pay are applicable.

Full time employees

Full time employees who would normally be required to work on Monday 28 January 2019 (the designated public holiday under the Hairdressers Award) but who are not required to work because it is a public holiday, are entitled to be paid for that day. If a full time employee is required to work on Monday 28 January 2019, public holiday pay rates will apply.

If Monday 28 January 2019 falls on a full time employee’s non-working day (referred to as a ‘rostered day off’), then the rostered day off is to be taken on the employee’s next following working day, or by mutual agreement, another day within the same week.

Alternatively, the award allows the employer and employee to agree on the employee accumulating up to five rostered days off in any given year, which may be taken at a mutually agreed time.

Part time employees

Part time employees who would normally be required to work on Monday 28 January 2019 (the designated public holiday under the Hairdressers Award) but who are not required to work because it is a public holiday, are entitled to be paid for that day. If a part time employee is required to work on Monday 28 January 2019, public holiday pay rates will apply.

If a part time employee would not normally be required to work on a designated public holiday, there are no additional public holiday entitlements.

Casual employees

Casual employees who are required to work on Monday 28 January 2019 (the designated public holiday under the Hairdressers Award) must be paid at public holiday rates. Casual employees will be entitled to public holiday rates of pay on Monday 28 January, but not on Saturday 26 January.
