North West painters and decorators are being asked to contribute to the first- ever snapshot of the painting and decorating industry in Western Australia.

A survey by the Painting Reference Group, which is made up of representatives from the Building Commission and Master Painters and Decorators Australia, is now open to painters and decorators who are operating in unregulated areas of the state. The unregulated areas are roughly all areas north and east of Kalbarri.

“This survey is designed to give us a greater understanding of painting and decorating in WA and the information gathered will be used to improve the laws that govern the industry,” said Building Commissioner Peter Gow.

“The Building Commission is examining issues that directly affect unregistered painters and decorators, including the feasibility of extending the registration of painters to all areas of the state. I encourage all unregistered painters to complete the survey so we can ensure their views are heard and considered.”

To complete the survey go to or contact the Building Commission on 1300 489 099 or The deadline for submissions is Friday 27 September 2013.

A separate survey was previously distributed to registered painters and is now closed.

The Building Commission will use the information obtained through the surveys to produce a State of the Industry Report covering all of WA, which will be made available to industry members.

“We’ve had a great response from registered painters, now we need unregistered painters to fill out the survey and help us complete the picture,” Mr Gow said.

All answers and comments provided are confidential and no individuals will be identified in the report or used for any other purpose.
