Leeming man Vernon Mica Clements has been fined $1,300 and ordered to pay costs of $213 by the Perth Magistrates Court after being found guilty of one charge of carrying out unregistered painting work and one charge of alluding to being a registered painter.

Mr Clements, trading under the name ‘Intergrated Roofing Services’, alluded to a potential client that he was a registered painter in order to obtain contract work. The client engaged Intergrated Roofing Services to carry out painting work at a Dianella property to a value of $17,400. Mr Clements arranged for another unregistered person to carry out the work on his behalf and issued invoices to the client that quoted a registration number that did not belong to him.

“In Western Australia it is illegal to carry out painting work valued over $1,000 without being registered,” said Building Commissioner Peter Gow.

“The Building Commission’s inspectors and investigators are experienced and thorough when it comes to identifying offences and enforcing the requirement for registration, which is in place for a good reason.

“The registration system maintains the integrity of the building industry and protects consumers by ensuring a person with the necessary qualifications, knowledge and experience carries out work that meets the minimum building standards and complies with building regulations.

“Anyone intending to carry out building, painting or plumbing-related work in Western Australia is reminded that they should check if registration is required before starting.”
