Geraldton consumers will enjoy extra hours of shopping on a permanent basis.

In response to the recent provision of fresh information by the City of Greater Geraldton, the Minister for Commerce and Industrial Relations Bill Johnston reviewed his decision to approve extended retail trading hours in Geraldton.

On 28 November 2018, the Minister informed the Council that, having assessed the material provided, he was satisfied that the findings upon which he made his initial decision were sound and his decision therefore, was to approve a continuation of Geraldton’s extended trading entitlements.

The approval by the Minister comes after a unanimous decision by councillors to support extended trading.

This followed a 12 month trial which resulted in local community support for the temporary extension to be made permanent.

General retail shops in Geraldton will now be allowed to open from 8am to 9pm weekdays, 8am to 5pm Saturdays and 11am to 5pm on Sundays and public holidays, except for Christmas Day, Good Friday and ANZAC Day.

Prior to the trial, major shops could only open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays (except Thursdays), 8am to 9pm on Thursdays, 8am to 5pm on Saturdays and had to close on Sundays and public holidays.
