A Welshpool spray painter has been fined $5,000 for operating without a licence and a further $150 for failing to renew his business name registration.

Travis Robert Turnbull, who operates TRT Automotive Refinishers, pleaded guilty in the Perth Magistrates Court today to operating a motor vehicle repair business without a licence and without a current business name registration. He was also ordered to pay $466 in Court costs.

Lawyers for Consumer Protection told the Court that Mr Turnbull applied for a licence in September 2009 but failed to submit a credit history report and pay the application fee. The licence was not issued but Mr Turnbull continued to operate the business illegally between July 2011 and February 2012.

Mr Turnbull’s business name registration was not renewed when it expired in November 2009 and was subsequently cancelled. A new application for registration was made in August 2011.

Commissioner for Consumer Protection Anne Driscoll reminded vehicle repairers that they must have a licence to operate to ensure standards are maintained in the industry.

“The rights of consumers are protected when vehicle repairers must apply for a licence – a system that keeps backyard operators out of the industry,” Ms Driscoll said.

“Vehicle repairers operating without a licence will be prosecuted and we urge all consumers to check a repairer’s licence, or look for the distinctive yellow sign, before doing business with them.”

Unlicensed vehicle repairers should be reported to Consumer Protection on 1300 30 40 54 or by email consumer@commerce.wa.gov.au .
