Unlicensed Rockingham vehicle repairer fined (Green Light Mechanical)

A Rockingham vehicle repair business has been fined $1,700 and ordered to pay costs of $353 by the Rockingham Magistrates Court for operating without a licence.

Green Light Mechanical in Hurell Way had submitted an incomplete licence application in December 2009 and failed to pay the application fee. Five written requests and reminders from Consumer Protection to supply supporting documents and pay the fee were ignored.

The business was eventually granted a licence in November 2012 but had operated without a licence for almost three years. Vehicle repairers in WA are required to be licensed since July 2008.

Acting Commissioner for Consumer Protection Gary Newcombe said that vehicle repairers in WA risk prosecution if they operate without licence.

“The licensing system for vehicle repairers is essential in ensuring that only competent and qualified tradespeople are employed to work on vehicles,” Mr Newcombe said.

Consumers can check whether a vehicle repairer is licensed by doing a search on the Consumer Protection website: www.commerce.wa.gov.au/consumerprotection or look for the distinctive yellow and black sign with the tick of approval. Unlicensed repairers can be reported by calling 1300 30 40 54 or by email: consumer@commerce.wa.gov.au.
