Painters and decorators

Painter

Painters in Western Australia are governed by a number of Acts and Regulations, including the Building Services (Registration) Act 2011 and the Building Services (Complaint Resolution and Administration) Act 2011. Building and Energy has the authority to investigate and take proceedings for offences against these Acts in the Magistrates Court and refer a matter to the State Administrative Tribunal for disciplinary action.

Building and Energy recommends that you carry out work in accordance with the Australian Standard AS2311 and manufacturer's recommendations. The Australian Standards are available from SAI Global. Building and Energy is able to assist by providing advice on paint technology and surface breakdown.

As a registered painter you are responsible for all work carried out and cannot delegate this responsibility, even if the client agrees to it. The work needs to be guaranteed for six years from completion.

Building and Energy can provide you with technical advice and may also grant an inspection of your own work if required.
