Motor vehicle dealer exemptions

Certain occupations may apply for exemption from compliance with the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act 1973. These exemptions, if granted, apply for a three year period.

Auctioneers' exemption

Auctioneers may be exempted by the Commissioner from compliance with the Motor Vehicles Dealers Act 1973 provided the selling of vehicles does not constitute a significant part of an auctioneer's business

Car Hire Operator’s Exemption

Car hire operators may be exempted by the Commissioner from compliance with the Motor Vehicles Dealers Act 1973 provided the selling of vehicles does not constitute a significant part of the operator’s business and vehicles are ordinarily disposed of directly to licensed dealers.

Financiers' exemption

Financiers (finance providers) may be exempted by the Commissioner from compliance with the Motor Vehicles Dealers Act 1973, provided they ordinarily dispose of repossessed vehicles directly to licensed dealers or through auction houses.

The Commissioner can impose conditions on any exemption granted and can revoke the exemption at any time.
