Motor Vehicle Dealers' Licensing Kit

A motor vehicle dealer is someone who:

  • carries on the business of buying or selling vehicles; or a financier; or a car hire operator.
  • sells or exchanges four or more vehicles in any 12 month period to or with persons who are not dealers.

There are three types of licence and one registration for motor vehicle dealing in Western Australia

1. You need a motor vehicle dealer licence if you
  • make a business out of buying and selling vehicles;
  • act as an agent for others for the purpose of buying of selling cars. This includes selling by auction;
  • act as a financier for the purpose of buying or selling cars; or
  • operate a car rental business.

 

2. You need a motor vehicle yard manager licence if you
  • are employed by a dealer to manage or supervise his/ her business of buying or selling vehicles on his/ her premises.

 

3. You need a motor vehicle salesperson licence if you
  • are employed by a dealer in his/ her business of buying or selling vehicles on his/ her premises; but
  • you are NOT the yard manager.

 

4. You need a car market operator registration if you
  • carry on the business of providing premises for a car market (whether or not those premises are used for any other purpose).

 

Dealer Licence

To obtain a motor vehicle dealer licence

  • Successfully complete the dealer/yard manager licensing course run by an accepted training provider. 
  • Choose the correct licence category(ies) for the type of vehicles you plan to deal in or sell.
  • Ensure you have an appropriate premises from which to operate. 
  • If applicable, register your business name and/or company with ASIC.
  • Download the correct application form for your circumstances, making sure you indicate the licence category(ies) you have chosen and your nominated premises. 
  • Provide the relevant Police Check(s), which are not more than three (3) months old at the time of lodgement, for all partners/directors or the sole trader. Only Police Checks issued by our list of approved providers will be accepted.
  • Attach/pay the correct fee. This is payable at the time of lodging the application.
  • Consumer Protection will check your credit history to make sure you can support the type of licence you apply for.
  • Check to make sure the application form is complete and you have provided all relevant supporting documents.

Yard Manager Licence

To obtain a motor vehicle yard manager licence

  • Successfully complete the dealer/yard manager licensing course run by an accepted training provider. 
  • Download the application form for a motor vehicle yard manager’s licence. 
  • Provide the relevant Police Check(s), which are not more than three (3) months old at the time of lodgement, for all partners/directors or the sole trader. Only Police Checks issued by  our list of approved providers will be accepted.
  • Attach/pay the correct feeThis is payable at the time of lodging the application.
  • Check to make sure the application form is complete and you have provided all relevant supporting documents.

Salesperson Licence

To obtain a motor vehicle salesperson licence

  • Successfully complete the motor vehicle salesperson licensing course run by an accepted training provider.
  • Download the application form for a motor vehicle salesperson’s licence.
  • Provide the relevant Police Check(s), which are not more than three (3) months old at the time of lodgement, for all partners/directors or the sole trader. Only Police Checks issued by our list of approved providers will be accepted.
  • Attach/pay the correct feeThis is payable at the time of lodging the application.
  • Check to make sure the application form is complete and you have provided all relevant supporting documents.

You may qualify to be a trainee salesperson while you are waiting for your licence to be granted.

Car Market Operator Registration

To obtain a car market operator registration

  • Ensure you have an appropriate premises from which to operate. 
  • If applicable, register your business name and/or company with ASIC.
  • Download the application form for a car market operator registration. 
  • Provide the relevant Police Check(s), which are not more than three (3) months old at the time of lodgement, for all partners/directors or the sole trader. Only Police Checks issued by our list of approved providers will be accepted.
  • Attach/pay the correct feeThis is payable at the time of lodging the application.
  • Check to make sure the application form is complete and you have provided all relevant supporting documents.
