2013 Winners
Congratulations to the winners and finalists of the 2013 Consumer Protection Awards and many thanks to all the nominees for their dedication to advancing consumer protection and injury prevention for children in Western Australia.
Rona Okely Award
Winner: Boon-Beng Chew
Boon-Beng Chew (right) is the Manager of Community Services at the Shire of Christmas Island. Having worked for the Shire for over 30 years, Boon-Beng is a respected advocate for Christmas Island groups and organisations. He taps into the Island’s associations, community functions and cultural festivals to create consumer awareness of changes to legislation and issues such as scams and product recalls.
Special Commendation: Lynda Wennstrom
Richard (Dick) Fletcher Award
Winner: Council on the Ageing (WA)
Council on the Ageing (WA) works to protect and advance the rights of senior Western Australians by promoting and providing services, benefits and programs, including the Seniors’ Housing Centre. The Council specifically targets risk areas such as age discrimination, technology, crime, real estate, safe use of medicines and physical and mental performance, to protect seniors. Kidsafe WA Award
Winner: Anne Miller
Anne Miller (right) has worked at School Drug Education and Road Aware since 2003 as the Curriculum Resource Coordinator and Regional Operations Coordinator. Anne has provided drug and road safety education for all Western Australian schools and early childhood services and produced curriculum and support materials for Western Australian teachers, students, parents and carers.

Media Award
Winners: Louise Burke and 720 ABC Perth
Louise Burke (far right) has kept consumers up to date on consumer protection issues, resulting in The West Australian publishing more than 30 of her articles in 2012 as its Social Media Editor. Louise reported on a number of issues including the danger of lithium button batteries, technological surveillance of shoppers, online scams, mobile bill shock and the use of personal data online and on Facebook.
720 ABC Perth has been a strong advocate for consumer rights and safety by running a weekly consumer protection segment on Thursday mornings since 2009. The show, presented by Geoff Hutchison (right) reports the latest news on consumer issues and is a public forum to discuss current consumer concerns, raise issues and seek support.
