
2011 Western Australian Science Awards
The Western Australian Science Awards (WA Science Awards) were
established in 2002 to honour and reward the outstanding achievements
of Western Australia's science and innovation community.
Now in their 10th year, the WA Science Awards continue to recognise
excellence in all fields of science, including the natural, medical,
applied and technological sciences, engineering and mathematical
sciences.
On 8 December 2011, the winners in the 10th annual WA Science Awards were announced at a gala dinner hosted by Science and Innovation Minister John Day.
Congratulations to all of the winners and finalists in this year's awards and to Dr Bernard Bowen, the 2011 WA Science Hall of Fame Inductee.

Categories
The 2011 WA Science Awards celebrate the States best scientists,
science communicators and science teachers in seven categories:
Research
Scientist of the Year Cash prize of $50,000
Acknowledges an individual scientist who has demonstrated excellence
in a field of science, science research or technological advancement
in Western Australia over the past 10 years.
Early Career Scientist of the Year Cash prize of $10,000
Acknowledges an individual scientist who, within the first 10 years
of completing their highest degree has demonstrated excellence in
a field of science, science research or technological advancement
in Western Australia.

Nominees for the Scientist of the Year/Early Career Scientist of the Year categories are to also include a list of the nominee’s peer reviewed publications from the previous 5 years.
Communication
Science Communication Initiative of the Year Cash prize
of $10,000
Recognises an individual, group or organisation that has delivered
an outstanding, innovative and ongoing science communication initiative
within the past year. The initiative must promote and encourage
community understanding of science within Western Australia.
Education
Science Educator of the Year: Secondary Cash prize of $10,000
Science Educator of the Year: Primary Cash prize of $10,000
Mathematics
Educator of the Year: Primary Cash prize of $10,000*
Mathematics Educator of the Year: Secondary Cash prize of
$10,000
These awards acknowledge primary and secondary science teachers
who have demonstrated excellence in improving science or mathematics
teaching and learning outcomes for their students over the past
five years in a Western Australian school. This year two new categories
have been announced to recognise excellence in mathematics teaching.
