BioGENEius Challenge competition winners

The BioGENEius Challenge provides an opportunity for motivated and talented high school students to undertake outstanding research in the field of biotechnology. Participating students are paired with one of WA’s world-class biotechnology scientists who mentor them through a high-level biotechnology research project.

Winners of the 2011 BioGENEius Challenge are:

  • Ailsa Brown from Perth Modern
  • Clare Moran from St Hilda’s Anglican School for Girls

Science hall of fame inductees

Induction into the Science Hall of Fame recognises meritorious contribution to the science community over an extended period of time. Inductees to the WA Science Hall of Fame receive a plaque but no financial reward.

2010 Science Hall of Fame Inductee: Professor Fiona Stanley

Professor Fiona Stanley is an Epidemiologist noted for her work on Cerebral Palsy and children’s health. Her work in relation to Aboriginal health encouraged a renewed focus on epidemiology and public health.

Fiona has espoused the importance of using population data to provide significant health, social and economic benefits to the community. She is the founding director of the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research (TICHR).

Fiona is the CEO of the Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth, and is Professor of Paediatrics at UWA. Winthrop Professor Stanley’s research includes: strategies to improve health and well-being in populations; causes and prevention of birth defects and major neurological disorders including cerebral palsies; the causes of and lifelong consequences of low birth weight; and patterns of maternal and child health in Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal populations. The new state-of-the-art hospital being constructed at Murdoch is to be named the Fiona Stanley Hospital in honour of her achievements. Professor Stanley is a member of the Prime Minister’s Science, Engineering and Innovation Council.

Fiona was named Australian of the Year in 2003.

2009 Science Hall of Fame Inductee: Professor Ian Constable

Professor Ian Constable AO - Professor of Ophthalmology, University of Western Australiais recognised as one of the world’s leading ophthalmic surgeons. He is the founder of the Lions Eye Institute and, under his guidance, the institute has delivered ground-breaking discoveries and developments in eye research, including the LEI artificial cornea, which is granting sight to people all around the world.

Professor Constable was also instrumental in his role as chair of the science advisory councils to the State Government in recommending funding priorities and establishing the WA Energy Research Alliance, the Western Australian Marine Science Institution and the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research.

2008 Science Hall of Fame Inductee: Emeritus Professor John de Laeter

WA Science Awards winners

The Western Australian Science Awards honour the outstanding and groundbreaking achievements of Western Australia's science and innovation community and recognise the important role of science in Western Australia.

The awards cover all fields of science, including the natural, medical, applied and technological sciences, engineering and mathematical sciences.
