Learn about the safety practices for different industries

Workplace safety practices differ for every industry.  This area provides occupational safety and health information relevant to specific industries.

The industries are grouped by the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industry Classification (ANZSIC) which is a standard way of collecting statistics and information that allows comparisons to be made with other countries.

  • Accommodation, and food services 
    This industry group includes accommodation, food and beverage services. 
  • Administrative and support services
    This industry includes administrative services, building cleaning, pest control and other support services.
  • Agriculture, forestry and fishing 
    This industry group includes agriculture, aquaculture, forestry and logging, fishing, hunting and trapping and agriculture, forestry and fishing support services.
  • Arts and recreational services 
    This industry group includes heritage activities, creative and performing arts, sports and recreation and gambling activities.
  • Construction
    This industry group includes safety and health issues in construction.
  • Education and training
    This industry group includes preschool and school education, tertiary education, adult, community and other education.
  • Electricity, gas, water and waste services 
    This industry group are involved in electricity supply, gas supply, water supply, sewerage and draining services and waste collection, treatment and disposal services.
  • Financial and insurance services 
    This industry group includes includes finance, insurance and superannuation funds, and auxiliary finances and insurance services.
  • Health care and social assistance 
    This industry group includes includes hospitals, medical and other health care services, residential care and social assistance services.
  • Information media and telecommunications 
    This industry group covers includes publishing, motion picture and sound recording activities, broadcasting, telecommunications services, internet service providers, web search portals and data processing services and library and other information services.
  • Manufacturing 
    This industry group is about production of goods and processing, including food, metals and wood, electronics, vehicles and equipment.
  • Mining 
    WorkSafe does not have jurisdiction over the mining industry. Refer to Resources Safety division of the Department of Mines and Petroleum.
  • Other services 
    This industry group includes repair and maintenance, hair and beauty, and private households employing staff.
  • Professional, scientific and technical services
    This industry group includes scientific research, architecture, engineering, computer systems, design, law, accountancy, advertising, market research, management and other consultancy, veterinary science and professional photography.
  • Public administration and safety 
    This industry group covers all levels of government.  WorkSafe does not cover Commonwealth government. Refer to ComCare.
  • Rental, hiring and real estate services
    This industry group includes rental and hiring services (except real estate), property operators and real estate services.
  • Transport, postal and warehousing 
    This industry group includes includes road, rail, water, air and space transport, postal and courier pick-up and delivery services, transport support services and warehousing and storage services.
  • Wholesale and retail
    This industry group is involved in wholesaling of basic material, machinery and equipment, motor vehicle and motor vehicle parts, other goods and commission based wholesaling and retail of motor and motor vehicle parts, fuel, food other store based retailing and retail commission based buying and/or selling.

Based on industry information, WorkSafe WA focuses resources on  six main industry groups in an effort to reduce high incidence and severity of injuries in those industries. These are, agriculture, forestry and fishing, construction, health and community services, manufacturing, transport and storage, wholesale and retail.
