Consumer Protection in WA has urged caution in the use of ethanol heaters and fireplaces in the home after several serious injuries in Queensland.

Advertised as easy, smokeless and eco-friendly ways to keep warm, ethanol fireplaces have an open flame which can be difficult to see particularly in daylight and well-lit rooms. This product is attractive to some consumers as it doesn’t require professional installation, connection to gas lines or ventilation. They come in a variety of styles, including freestanding models and some intended to sit on top of furniture.

Recent explosions involving these types of heaters have been reported in Queensland resulting in serious burns and occurred when users mistakenly believed the flame had gone out while attempting to re-fuel or move the unit.

Commissioner for Consumer Protection Anne Driscoll said consumer protection agencies are investigating whether specific regulations are required for these new products which have appeared on the market.

“While only one minor incident has been reported in WA so far, the Queensland experience has shown that these products, if not used properly, can potentially cause serious burns to users with the added risk of starting house fires,” Ms Driscoll said.

“We are looking closely at this product nationally to determine the risks to consumers and what action is required. While our safety concerns are being considered, we urge people who have purchased these products to exercise caution when using them and to keep children well clear.

“Users of ethanol heaters and fireplaces should take extra care. Ensure the flame is completely extinguished and the unit has cooled sufficiently before attempting to re-fuel or move it.

“Appropriate guards should be around the flame, especially if children are present or if the flame is difficult to see.”

Safety tips when using ethanol heaters and fireplaces include:

  • Strictly follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use
  • Never leave the product unattended while in use, especially if there are children around
  • Keep the flame away from combustible material such as clothes or curtains
  • Make sure the fireplace has had plenty of time to cool before attempting to move or refuel it
  • Store fuel in a separate room to the fireplace
  • Have an appropriate fire extinguisher nearby
  • Never use the product for cooking
  • Never throw combustible material into the fireplace
  • Always use the fuel recommended by the manufacturer
  • Ensure appropriate guards are in place to minimise exposure risk
