A personal and business development seminar organising company has been ordered to pay a total of $6,000 by the Perth Magistrates Court after being found guilty on 8 June 2018.
Success Resources Australia Pty Ltd, registered and based in Sydney, was fined $5,000 and ordered to pay $1,000 in costs for failing to provide the services within a reasonable time, or at all, after receiving full payment.
Two consumers from Subiaco and The Lakes registered and paid $1,895 and $3,990, respectively, to attend a seminar in Melbourne in August 2014 called “Never Work Again”.
The seminar was cancelled and then rescheduled for February 2015, however, neither consumer could attend. The event was not rescheduled again.
Success Resources did not refund the money to the consumers until January 2018 after the commencement of the prosecution by Consumer Protection.
Commissioner for Consumer Protection David Hillyard warned consumers to thoroughly check cancellation policies when registering for these types of seminars.
“It is ironic that the seminars were all about promoting financial management and business development and yet they don’t seem to practise what they preach when it comes to looking after the attendees who pay up front,” he said.
“The Australian Consumer Law demands that a service that is paid for must be delivered within a reasonable period of time. It is clear that Success Resources failed to do that on this occasion.”
