Vehicle hire business closes leaving consumers out of pocket (Drive Beyond)

Consumer Protection is concerned about a vehicle hire business which appears to have closed down leaving customers out of pocket.

Rent Beyond Pty Ltd, trading as Drive Beyond formerly of Beechboro Road in Bayswater, has vacated their Perth premises. The company is registered in Queensland but its sole director Nathan Joyce is based in Victoria. Consumer Protection has not been able to contact Mr Joyce or anyone from the company, with the contact information on their website no longer valid and phone numbers no longer operating.

Four complaints have been received in recent days from consumers claiming to be owed a total of almost $30,000. The figure includes money paid upfront for the rental of four-wheel drive vehicles as well as bonds which were supposed to be refunded.

Acting Commissioner for Consumer Protection David Hillyard fears that there may be other customers of the business who have booked vehicles and made payments upfront.

“Already we have had customers turning up at the empty Bayswater premises expecting to pick up their hire vehicles but have been left high and dry,” Mr Hillyard said.

“Others who recently returned their vehicle while the business was operating are claiming that they haven’t yet had their bond money returned.

“We want any other consumers who may have booked and paid for vehicle hire through Drive Beyond to be aware of the situation and contact us so we know the extent of the losses. Consumers who have paid by credit card may also consider applying for a chargeback from their provider if they have not received the services they paid for.

“We will continue to investigate this closure and try to contact the principals behind the business.”

Consumers who are owed money by Drive Beyond and have yet to lodge a complaint are urged to do so via the Consumer Protection website www.dmirs.wa.gov.au/consumer-protection. Enquiries can be made by emailing consumer@dmirs.wa.gov.au or by calling 1300 30 40 54.
