WorkSafe inspection program looks at safety in restaurants

WorkSafe is conducting a further inspection program to look at safety standards in restaurants throughout the 2014/15 financial year.

An initial inspection program in this sector was conducted last financial year, and the areas of concern identified by that program prompted a follow-up.

The program will focus on larger restaurants in both metropolitan and regional areas.

WorkSafe Director Joe Attard said today the restaurant sector was being targeted again because of the high level of injuries and notices issued last year.

“The inspection program WorkSafe conducted last financial year saw a large number of improvement notices issued,” Mr Attard said.  “The industry also records a significant number of lost time injuries.

“We also saw a need to look at additional restaurant workplaces because there are so many in WA.

“Workers in restaurants face some specific risks in the course of their work, and statistics show they suffer mainly from muscle trauma from manual tasks, injuries resulting from slips, trips and falls, and cuts and burns.

“We need to ensure that employers have the information they require to make their workplaces safer, so inspectors will look at these specific areas along with more general areas such as electricity, hazardous substances and new and young workers.”

Inspections will be conducted with the aid of a checklist to ensure consistency, and this checklist can be accessed on WorkSafe’s website so employers will know what will be expected if they are visited by an inspector.

Unions and employer associations in the restaurant sector have been contacted by letter to inform them of this year’s inspection program.

“WorkSafe has an extensive schedule of proactive inspection programs concentrating on particular industries or activities or specific geographical areas aimed at raising awareness and providing information," Mr Attard said.

“We firmly believe that raising awareness with proactive programs is the best way in which to lessen the risk of work-related injury and illness, but inspectors will take enforcement action during the program if necessary.”
