Yuanda products in 13 WA buildings are asbestos-free

The Building Commission has confirmed that testing found no asbestos-containing building products and materials supplied by Yuanda Australia in its general inspection of 13 Western Australian buildings.

The general inspection was announced in July 2016, following the discovery of asbestos-containing building products and materials supplied and installed by Yuanda in two Australian buildings under construction – in roof panels in the Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH) and gaskets at a Brisbane office building.

Thirteen other public ally and privately owned WA buildings were identified as containing Yuanda-supplied building products and materials and were assessed in the general inspection.

A report released by the Building Commission today, titled General Inspection Report Two: A general inspection into Yuanda-supplied products in the Western Australian building industry, states that the type of roof panel Yuanda supplied for the PCH was individually designed for that project.

“Similar panels to the asbestos-containing ones installed in the Perth Children’s Hospital were not supplied for any of the 13 other Western Australian buildings identified as containing Yuanda-supplied building products and materials,” Building Commission Acting Executive Director Ian Munns said.

“The type of gasket used in the Brisbane building and found to contain asbestos has not been installed by Yuanda in WA buildings.

“A list of products and materials considered to be at possible risk of containing asbestos were sampled and tested for each of the 13 WA buildings in the general inspection.

“Testing was undertaken by National Association of Testing Authorities accredited facilities and no evidence of asbestos was found in any of the tests carried out.”

Sixty-eight buildings were confirmed nationally as containing Yuanda-supplied products. Other building products and materials supplied and installed by Yuanda in WA buildings and assessed in the general inspection included steel and glass.

The general inspection was carried out separately to the PCH audit, which was concluded in April 2017 and found no other asbestos-containing building products or materials in the PCH building.

Both the general inspection report and the PCH final audit report are available on the Building Commission website at www.commerce.wa.gov.au/building-and-energy/audit-yuanda-building-products.
