A Wellard man who provided false details to gain building practitioner registration has been fined $5,000 by the Building Services Board.

Surjit Singh also agreed to surrender his registrations as a building practitioner (BP104706) and building contractor (BC104676).

Mr Singh became a registered building practitioner in April 2023 after completing a building diploma and claiming at least seven years of experience in carrying out or supervising building work.

According to information presented at the Board’s April meeting, Mr Singh’s application stated he had the required experience after working as a full-time site supervisor with a Victorian building company between 2014 and 2022. This claim was also confirmed by an email apparently sent by the company’s director.

A Building and Energy investigation later revealed Mr Singh’s declared experience as a site supervisor was false and he had in fact worked as a courier for a different Victorian business for most of this period. Mr Singh later admitted he lacked the required years of building industry experience.

Obtaining registration through incorrect or misleading information is a disciplinary matter under the Building Services (Registration) Act 2011.  

Building and Energy Executive Director Peter Stewart said Mr Singh does not appear to have carried out any prescribed building services in WA.

“This penalty should send a strong message that misleading conduct is unacceptable,” Mr Stewart said.

“WA’s robust registration processes ensure applicants have the appropriate skills, knowledge and experience to provide safe and compliant building services.”
