Commissioner's Blog: Congratulations to Consumer Protection Award winners

This announcement is for:
Consumer

Every day across Western Australia there many individuals and organisations fighting for the rights of WA consumers and a number of these outstanding efforts have been recognised in this year’s Consumer Protection Awards.

One such person is Mary Martin, who received the 2022 Rona Okely Award for an individual who has given their time, energy and experience for the betterment of others. Through her work as a tenancy advocate at the Northern Suburbs Community Legal Service, Mary combats homelessness by providing clients with advice on improving their finances and strategies to keep them in stable housing.

WA Child Safety Services won the Kidsafe WA Award, which focuses on the promotion of product safety and injury prevention for children. The service aims to create communities where children feel safe and are encouraged to speak up about abuse by offering home and school programs, parent and staff training workshops as well as abuse prevention books and teaching resources.

The Financial Toolbox Women at Risk Trust was awarded the Richard (Dick) Fletcher Award for an organisation or group of individuals. Operated mostly by volunteers, the Trust provides support and free online resources to women at risk of family and domestic violence and has produced a toolkit that has been used by over 52,000 people.

In the media category, ABC News Kimberley journalist Hannah Barry’s reports on the fraudulent practices of a funeral insurance fund that targeted Aboriginal Australians earned her the Ruby Hutchison Award for raising awareness and improving understanding of consumer issues.

Our former Commissioner David Hillyard received a special award in recognition of his more than 40 years fighting for the rights of WA consumers. To honour his achievement, a future category named the ‘David Hillyard Award’ will be created to recognise an outstanding and ongoing contribution to consumer protection in WA over a significant period of time.

On behalf of Consumer Protection, I congratulate the 2022 winners and finalists. We hope the recognition received goes some way towards rewarding their outstanding contribution to the community.
