The following can help you find a course to become a licensed repairer, dealer, yard manager or salesperson in the motor vehicle industry

Motor Vehicle Certified Repairers

To be a certified motor vehicle repairer, applicants must demonstrate they are sufficiently qualified in each class of repair work for which they are applying.  

Motor Vehicle Yard Managers and Salespersons

Motor vehicle yard managers and salespersons must be licensed to operate in WA.

Applicants must have sufficient knowledge of the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act 1973 and therefore must have completed the following training course relevant to the licence being applied for:

  • Motor Vehicle Yard Manager – Dealer / Yard Manager Licence Requirements Course
  • Motor Vehicle Salesperson – Salesperson’s Course

The above mentioned courses must have been completed within 5 years of applying for the relevant licence.

Training providers delivering these courses must be recognised by the Commissioner for Consumer Protection. The courses delivered by the following Registered Training Organisations are currently accepted by the Commissioner:

Please note training materials used for the courses remain, at all times, the property of the Department.

NOTE: If you have held the same type of licence within the last five years, or have been the qualifying director/partner or sole trader of a licensed dealership within the last 5 years, you may not be required to complete the course again. Instead you will need to attach a copy of your previous licence to your new application as evidence you qualify for a licence and have sufficient knowledge of the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act 1973.

Motor Vehicle Dealers

Motor vehicle dealers must be licensed to operate in WA.

Individual applicants, and the qualifying director/s or partner/s of a company or partnership applicant, must have sufficient knowledge of the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act 1973. The required training course is the Dealer / Yard Manager Licence Requirements Course.

The requirement to complete the course will depend on the applicant’s previous experience and current licence status, as follows:

  • If you have never been previously licensed under the Act or are currently licensed as a salesperson, you must complete the course within 5 years of applying for the licence.
  • If you are currently licensed as a yard manager, or have held a yard manager’s licence within the last 5 years, you do not need to complete the course again.
  • If you were the qualifying director/partner of a licensed dealership within the last 5 years, you do not need to complete the course again.

The qualifying director/partner is the person who has knowledge of the Act to enable a licence to be granted to the licensed company/partnership.
