EnergySafety carried out an investigation into the fire at Location 1478 near Esperance and determined that it was caused when a Western Power (the network operator) power pole broke and fell over during high winds. A live high voltage conductor clashed with the under-slung earth conductor and the resulting flashover caused hot metal particles to ignite dry stubble.
