Pool gate safety

This announcement is for:

Did you know that a pool gate must open away from the swimming pool area and that pool gate hinges need to be installed at certain locations and meet the relevant Australian Standard?

Statistically, pool gates are considered to be a high-risk area and are largely identified as being the most common:

  • entry point for young children that drown in pools; and
  • element of non-compliance picked up during local governments four yearly inspection programme.

Building and Energy is asking builders to be aware of the risks and to stay well-informed when installing or working on swimming pool safety barrier gates.

You can find more information on swimming pool safety barriers and their gates at www.dmirs.wa.gov.au/rules-for-pools and details on any Australian product safety recalls, such as pool gate latches, at www.recalls.gov.au
